So while it might seem restrictive to only be allowed pre-packaged items, it actually encompasses a huge variety of items. Things like candy, chips, salty snacks, beef jerky, and more fall under the umbrella. There should be no trouble bringing your favorite snack on the ship. You’ll find that other cruise lines have similar policies that allow you to bring on food and snacks.

Under the cruise contract you sign to board a ship, cruise lines have the right to search your room, throw you off the ship and turn you over to local authorities for any violations. If you do smoke, say, on your cabin balcony, it might be your fellow cruise passengers who rat you out. The crew is also trained to spot and report any illegal drugs. There are commonly prescribed medicines here that I think would be illegal in other countries (or illegal here without a prescription). I wonder how the cruise lines determine which ones are not allowed.

So, yes, cruise ships offer food around the clock, though the options at off hours can be limited. These dining venues are included in the cost of the cruise yet may require reservations for dinner. The included dining venues are typically the main dining room or rooms, large banquet-style spaces that serve sit-down dinner off a wide-ranging menu. On some ships, you will be assigned to a specific main dining room; other ships, such as Norwegian Cruise Line's fleet, will offer a couple and you can choose which one to go to on any given evening. Yet a modern-day cruise ship is more akin to your local downtown, with multiple restaurant choices and a range of cuisines on offer. You can find healthy or vegetarian food, ethnic options and everything from fast-food burgers to upscale molecular gastronomy dishes.

If we look at news reports, there are several examples of people who have been arrested, fined or even jailed for using marijuana during a cruise. Since all cruise terminals in the U.S. are federal facilities, the terminals and our ships are drug-free zones. I might be the only person to cruise with Zip-loc bags full of snacks…but I bet I'm in good company. Some lines run an afternoon tea with petit fours and crustless sandwiches, or have a deli or burger counter open from late morning until early evening. Look for cafe venues that might have some fruit or something a tad less greasy.

Keep in mind that if you're visiting National Parks or any federal lands, you are forbidden from smoking weed or using edibles (and almost all of Alaska's Inside Passage falls in that category). Also remember that anything you buy with weed in it cannot come back into the port area or on the ship. Carefully check local and state laws before you arrive at port to make sure you're complying with rules and regulations.
